The field is carved into three distinct registers: at the top and bottom, diagonal ribbed flutes run at a steady angle across the pile, catching light and shadow as the eye moves along them. Across the middle third, the carving shifts into a checkerboard relief — raised ivory squares alternating with slightly recessed, tan-toned compartments, creating a grid that reads through depth and shadow rather than dye.

This sculptural, hand-carved approach to pattern is a defining technique within Beni Ourain rug making, where the weaver works the pile itself into relief rather than relying on coloured yarn to carry the design. Tatalna is a particularly confident example of the technique, combining two distinct carved motifs — the flute and the checkerboard — within a single piece, entirely in the natural, undyed tone the Beni Ourain tradition is best known for.

Texture as Pattern: The Sculptural Technique

Where most rugs carry their pattern in colour, Tatalna carries it in depth. The diagonal flutes are carved so the pile sits slightly higher along each ridge and lower in each groove, meaning the pattern only fully reveals itself under natural light, shifting subtly as the angle of light changes through the day. The checkerboard panel works the same way at a smaller scale — each square a slightly different pile height, so the grid emerges from shadow rather than contrast.

Three Registers, One Tone

Tatalna's structure — flutes, checkerboard, flutes — gives the rug a sense of rhythm and variation without ever introducing a second colour. This restraint is central to its appeal: the piece reads as calm and monochrome from a distance, yet rewards close attention with genuine textural complexity up close.

Why Choose Tatalna for Your Home?

Genuine sculptural craftsmanship: Tatalna's carved relief is a hand-worked technique, not a printed or dyed pattern.

Pure, undyed ivory wool: The natural tone-on-tone palette fits effortlessly into almost any interior colour scheme.

Exceptional softness: 100% natural wool delivers the deep, plush pile quality Beni Ourain rugs are famous for.

A genuine one-of-a-kind piece: The specific carving of the flutes and checkerboard means Tatalna's texture exists nowhere else.

Room-defining size: At roughly 6'5"x10'2", Tatalna comfortably anchors a living room or bedroom.

Where Tatalna Works Best

Minimalist or quiet luxury interior: Tatalna's tone-on-tone palette and textural detail suit a restrained, considered space.

Neutral living room: As an all-ivory piece, Tatalna layers easily with almost any existing colour scheme.

Bedroom sanctuary: The deep, soft pile and calm palette make Tatalna a natural fit underfoot.

Scandinavian or Japandi interior: The restrained, texture-led design suits pared-back aesthetics built on natural materials.

A room with strong natural light: Tatalna's carved relief is best appreciated where daylight can move across it through the day.

Explore Our Moroccan Rug Collections

Tatalna is part of our curated selection of authentic Beni Ourain rugs.
