Yabre – An Ivory Beni Ourain Rug with a Sculptural Brick and Cobblestone Carved Relief
Yabre is one of the most architecturally ambitious pieces in our Beni Ourain rug collection — a 201x314 cm (6'7"x10'3" ft) hand-knotted Moroccan Berber rug in 100% natural wool from the Middle Atlas mountains that takes the carved relief technique to a genuinely unexpected destination. Where most carved relief Beni Ourain rugs work with diamond trellises or concentric geometric forms, the weaver of Yabre has created something far more rare: a full-field pattern of irregular rectangular blocks arranged in horizontal rows, separated by thin sunken lines running both horizontally and vertically across the entire surface. The result reads simultaneously as a bird's-eye view of a stone-paved courtyard, an elevation of a hand-laid brick wall, and a work of abstract textile sculpture — a pattern that has no fixed precedent in the Beni Ourain design vocabulary and instead reflects the individual vision of a single master weaver working at the outer edge of her craft.
Like all carved relief Beni Ourain rugs, Yabre works entirely in tone-on-tone: no dye, no colour contrast, no printed or stamped pattern. The blocks are higher-knotted pile; the separating lines are slightly lower; and the subtle difference in height between these two levels creates a pattern visible only through the interplay of shadow and light across the warm ivory wool surface. In raking light — morning sunlight from a low angle, or the directional glow of a reading lamp — Yabre's cobblestone grid casts micro-shadows that make the blocks appear almost three-dimensional, like a relief sculpture in wool. Yabre's brick-and-cobblestone composition belongs to this tradition of tiwiza — collective making and collective seeing — while also being entirely original: no two weavers would ever produce the same arrangement of blocks, sizes, proportions and recessed lines.
The varying widths of the rectangular blocks — some wide and expansive, others narrower and more compressed — prevent the pattern from becoming mechanical or repetitive. Instead, like a real stone pavement or hand-laid brick wall, the composition has an organic irregularity that makes it endlessly readable: no matter how long you look at Yabre, the eye finds new arrangements and rhythms within the overall grid. OunizZ founders, Sonia and Oussama, share a deep love for beauty and nature, both of which are abundant in Morocco. From snow-capped mountains and untouched deserts, to pristine beaches and ephemeral wetlands, OunizZ is on a mission to share the country’s hidden gems through exceptionally crafted Moroccan rugs, Beni Ourain rugs, and Boujaad rugs.
Sonia was working in the hospitality industry when the pandemic swept the world. The thousands of travelers who journeyed to Morocco each year were unable to buy the one-of-a-kind handmade items that enriched the local economy, while weavers (some of them Sonia’s family members) were unable to sell their textiles and put food on their tables.
When Sonia lost her hospitality job, she realized she could uplift hundreds of women, returning their financial independence and ability to practice the craft they had honed over decades. She and her husband Oussama founded OunizZ with the vision of transforming the industry and exporting Moroccan rugs to the world and, within a year, the company grew into the largest exporter of rugs in the country.
Bringing Transparency to the Moroccan Textile Industry
While Moroccan rugs have grown in demand over the past few decades, the art form has been under threat. This is because the overwhelming majority of companies selling Moroccan rugs online are not the makers—instead, they are intermediaries who buy rugs at low prices.
Moroccan rugs are traditionally made in rural areas with little access to education and employment. Many of these weavers do not know the market value of the rugs they create. As a result, the women who create Moroccan rugs become invisible in the industry, seldom benefitting from their sales and rarely making enough to sustain their families.
At OunizZ, we don’t—and never will—source rugs through intermediaries. Instead, we work directly with weavers to ensure they are paid fairly. Our Moroccan rugs, Beni Ourain rugs, and Boujaad rugs are custom-made for OunizZ, and crafted in our weavers' own homes, where they work with their mothers, sisters, and daughters. This empowers them to pass on generational wisdom while working at their own rhythm and caring for their families and communities.
